Are you making the most of gym time?

When I talk to people the general consensus seems to be the more time you spend in the gym the more results you will achieve. I beg to differ though. My personal & professional training sessions rarely hit the hour mark, I like to go for quality rather than quantity. Let me put this into perspective for you. Next time you’re at the gym have a look around. I would bet money on it that half the people in the gym are on their smart phones and not exercising. I would also bet money on the fact that half the girls in the gym are on the treadmills.

Now you are probably thinking what’s wrong with that? I do that  ... Well it comes down to what this article is about which is maximising your time in the gym instead of wasting it. I can tell you that my 45 minute workout would probably be more productive then the guy that is there for 2 hours on his smart phone half the time. I can also tell you that my 45 minute workout would also be more productive than the girl that is strolling on the treadmill like she does every single time she works out. Why? Because I have a plan, I know what I"m doing in regards to training effectively and doing the right workout to ensure I reach my goal and I also don’t like to muck around either. The gym is not a place I like to just "hang out" at. I have much better things to do with my time and I"d rather be on my smart phone at home, wouldn"t you?

So the questions you need to be asking yourself is this (and be real)

How long have I been coming to the gym/exercising for?

Have I achieved my goal?

Do I even have a goal?

Do I spend a lot of time on my smart phone while working out?

Am I really working out to my full potential and putting in a real effort?

Now re-read the last question. Am I really working out to my full potential and putting in a REAL effort? I ask this question because I know for a fact you are not. Its human nature first of all to be lazy and I know myself that I don’t workout nearly as hard when I train by myself as I do when I’m training with my training partner. You’re not wrong it’s just human to be that way and when you are a beginner it’s even worse because you don’t know what you’re doing and you’re probably doing the wrong things.

I recall myself a fair few years ago now when I first joined a gym with all the intentions in the world to go and get fit and healthy. The first time I went I did a 20 minute run, used the bicep curl machine and ab curler machine it killed me but I thought to myself "Fair effort Sarah, that’s enough for today, will come tomorrow". The next day I went and this time I did a 20 minute run and that was it. I never went back to the gym for the whole duration of my 12 month contract. Not because I didn’t want to but because I had no idea what to do and wasn"t seeing a result quick enough (young and silly I know). When I think back to that time I realise it was a complete waste of my money and time for that matter. It did nothing.

So you can be going to the gym for 2 hours a day 5 days per week and still not get a result if your training the wrong way for your goal and or the effort and intensity is too low. Get out of the mindset of thinking because you go to the gym or have joined the gym you are automatically going to be fitter and get to your goal weight regardless of what you do. It doesn’t work like that and if it did everyone would have abs and I wouldn’t have a job!

Start being real people. Get off your smart phones, get the right program for your goal and stop wasting your time and money on not achieving a result. If you’re going to go put some REAL effort into it.

Let me give you a few pointers here;

  1. If you are trying to lose weight ladies you need to get off the treadmills and start lifting weights. The more muscle mass you have in your body the more fat you will burn and the more toned you will appear.
  2. Lads get off your iPhone. Unless you are doing max strength training you should not be resting for 5 minutes in between sets, you’re just letting muscles go cold and you’re not getting any gains by doing this. You may as well have stayed at home.
  3. Don’t skip leg day or leg exercises. I know, I know leg exercises are so much effort and it hurts like hell but we all know they are the most effective exercises to increase muscle mass in your body and to burn fat. So get up off the little bicep curl machine that makes you seem like you’re working out when you’re really bludging and get into the good stuff.
  4. Get a tailored program to ensure that you are not wasting your time. If you’re going to go to all the effort to go to the gym and pay the money to have a membership then do it properly.

    I highly recommend AMAZE TEA"s Pre Workout for a Natural Boost to your workout regime. It also helps with fat loss whilst working out, muscle repair, fatigue and soreness.
